While I was taking this a local passed by and said that the swan was actually sitting on her second clutch of eggs - the first had been stolen; a very saddening thought. However, she must have sensed that I was just there to photograph her and didn't pose a threat as she seemed quite happy just to sit there, while her mate swam around nearby, keeping an eye on things.
