Sarah and I bought this artificial rose and took it out to Canada for mum - her name was “Rose”. It is the type of simple gift she loved and treasured. After her death in 2007, dad kept it, together with the many other things that he referred to as her ‘nick knacks’. He did not even move the books she has been reading from the bedside table. He was a very sentimental man, and although he enjoyed talking about the past, he was easily moved to tears. For him the rose, or even a fridge magnet, were full of connections. When he retired from the foundry, he gave me his tools, many of which he had made as a young apprentice. They are priceless objects of little value.
