The Cottages
With parts of the cottages dating back to 1736, there is a wealth
of history in Red Lion Cottages.
Originally farm
buildings in the agricultural heartland of north Northumberland, the
buildings were later to serve as a popular local inn. In the late 1980's
the Red Lion Inn was converted to a charming group of 5 self-contained
cottages with a surrounding area of communal land.
Thanks to the
history of the buildings, the cottages each have their own unique
features. The arch above the windows of one cottage hark back to
the days when this actually served as a farm store. The large rooms of
others recall when they served as stables and, more recently, as bar-rooms.

However, despite each cottage's distinct individuality, the setting
provides a certain sense of continuity and community, with all five cottages
grouped around a spacious central courtyard.
